Men's Health

What is men’s health?

Men’s health is a complicated health field that includes both the specialty of urology and a wide range of health concerns specific to men.

Some conditions only affect men. These include problems with the male reproductive and urinary symptoms, and issues related to levels of testosterone, the primary male sex hormone. This is an important part of men’s health, but not all.

Men’s health also means treatment, regardless of specialty, that considers the distinct health risks facing men. You may not think of conditions outside the scope of urology as gender-specific. However, many health problems affect men in different ways than women, including:

    • Cardiovascular disease, which is more common among men than women and affects men at a younger age on average
  • Melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer, which is more likely to be fatal in men than women
  • Depression, which goes undiagnosed in many men, and is more likely to lead to substance abuse and suicide than in women
  • Alcoholism, which affects more men than women

Many health issues common among men are preventable and result from risky behavior or not seeking medical treatment. As a men’s health specialist, Dr. Tyson can help you stay on top of your well-being.

How is male sexual dysfunction treated?

Dr. Tyson and his team at Balanced Health Medical Center want you to have optimal health. Your sexual function is an important part of that. Often, if you experience sexual dysfunction, it provides clues to issues with your overall health.

When you present issues with sexual function, including erectile dysfunction (ED), Dr. Tyson looks at your overall health, including your diet and level of physical activity. You may simply need to change some of your habits, which can improve your vascular health (and in turn, correct ED).

In some cases, erectile dysfunction requires targeted treatment that boosts blood flow to your penis. Dr. Tyson may prescribe intracavernous injections, a prescription treatment for ED that you take in preparation for sex. Balanced Health Medical Center also offers GAINSWave®, an in-office treatment that uses shock waves to improve your body’s natural sexual response.

Dr. Tyson is experienced in diagnosing and treating low testosterone, a common cause of erectile dysfunction, especially among men who are middle-aged and older. If he diagnoses you with low testosterone, he may recommend testosterone replacement therapy, as well as dietary and lifestyle changes that can naturally improve your testosterone levels.

How can I stay healthy?

Healthy habits can prevent many of the common health conditions that affect men from becoming serious problems. To stay feeling your best, you should:

  • Undergo routine medical exams and screenings, including with a primary care doctor and specialists as necessary
  • See a doctor if you’ve noticed any concerning changes to your health
  • Get regular physical activity and eat a healthy diet
  • Be aware of your emotions and how you respond to them, and seek behavioral health care when you’re struggling
  • Abstain from tobacco and drink alcohol in moderation, if at all
